INTRINSIC SAFETY BARRIER

Intrinsic Safety BarriersIntrinsic safety barriers from Pepperl+Fuchs limit the energy that is supplied to a circuit and protect hazardous areas from excess energy. By limiting energy to a safe level, intrinsically safe circuits prevent the ignition of potentially explosive atmospheres. This simplifies maintenance and repair of Ex i circuits.

Pepperl+Fuchs offers a variety of intrinsic safety barriers for different requirements. Select between isolated barriers and Zener barriers that ensure safe signal transmission in hazardous areas.

Isolated Barriers
In addition to their explosion protection function, isolated barriers offer galvanic isolation to protect measurement and control circuits from signal distortion and dangerous surges. These interface modules also convert, standardize, and split measurement and control signals.
Zener Barriers
Zener barriers prevent the transmission of excessively high energy levels from the non-explosion hazardous area to the hazardous area. These interface modules are the right choice when galvanic isolation is not needed or otherwise provided.
Intrinsic safety barriers are the core of Pepperl+Fuchs' product portfolio. We offer the widest selection of products for protection of electrical signals located in hazardous areas. These intrinsic safety modules combine the energy limiting features of a zener barrier with galvanic isolation. Pepperl+Fuchs offers systems for different applications and mountings.


K-System
Our most popular intrinsic safety isolated barriers are the flexible DIN rail mounted K-System modules. The K-System intrinsic safety barriers connect easily with our Power Rail assembled in the DIN rail. The use of the Power Rail reduces the wiring by energizing the modules mounted on the DIN rail.

H-System
The intrinsic safety isolated barriers of the H-System are mounted on termination boards. This innovative product is ideal for applications requiring tight DCS or system integration.

This isolated barrier is used for intrinsic safety applications. The device supplies 2-wire SMART transmitters in a hazardous area. It transfers the analog input signal to the safe area as an isolated current value. Digital signals may be superimposed on the input signal in the hazardous or safe area and are transferred bi-directionally. If the HART communication resistance in the loop is too low, the internal resistance of 250 Ω between terminals 8 and 9 can be used. Test sockets for the connection of HART communicators are integrated into the terminals of the device.

The KFD2-CD-Ex1.32 transmits an electrical unit signal from the safe area to the hazardous area. The conversion of a current signal into a voltage signal and vice versa is possible. Current input option A current limit circuit in series to terminal 9 protects the device from damage. The max. voltage drop at the input is DC 4 V, allowing for the connection of several KFD2-CD32-Ex1.32 repeaters due to the low voltage drop in order to maintain multiple galvanically isolated outputs (signal duplication). Voltage input option The signal is transmitted to terminals 9 and 10 across an amplifier and the DC/DC converter within the allowable voltage range. A voltage limiter circuit protects the amplifier from incorrect input switching and overvoltage, but will draw current through a 50 mA fuse during operation. The fuse can be changed only by the manufacturer. Current output option The open circuit voltage is DC 24 V within the allowable supply voltage range at terminals 1 and 2. The max. load that can be applied is 850 ???. Voltage output option At least 20 mA is available within the allowable supply voltage range at terminals 1 and 2 which means that with 10 V output voltage, a load of at least 500 ??? must be connected

    The MTL7700 range follows closely in the footsteps of the MTL700, but as a DIN rail mounting barrier, providing quick and easy installation without the need for special hardware

    Removable terminals are used for ease of installation, maintenance and for providing a loop disconnect by simply unplugging the terminals from the side of the module. 

    MTL7700 barriers clamp simply and securely onto standard T-section DIN rail, simultaneously making a reliable IS earth connection.

    For applications where field power is required for switch inputs or 2-wire transmitters, the MTL7700 range provides a bussed power feed facility. When used in conjunction with the MTL7798 power feed module the user has a fully protected, electronically fused supply to many barriers with no additional wiring required.

    MTL7700 active modules are protected with an electronic fuse for the majority of applications.

    This isolated barrier is used for intrinsic safety applications. It supplies power to solenoids, LEDs, and audible alarms, located in a hazardous area. It is controlled via a logic signal. The input has two defined states: 1-Signal = 16 V DC  30 V DC, 0- Signal = 0 V DC 5 V DC. At full load, 11.2 V at 45 mA is available for the hazardous area application. If the field impedance is > 10 kfor lead breakage or < 50  for short circuits a line fault is detected. During an error condition, the fault indication output deenergizes. A fault is signalized by LEDs acc. to NAMUR NE44 and a separate collective error message output.

    Power feed module KFD2-EB2 The power feed module is used to supply the devices with 24 V DC via the Power Rail. The fuse-protected power feed module can supply up to 100 individual devices depending on the power consumption of the devices. A galvanically isolated mechanical contact uses the Power Rail to transmit collective error messages. Power Rail UPR-03 The Power Rail UPR-03 is a complete unit consisting of the electrical inset and an aluminium profile rail 35 mm x 15 mm. To make electrical contact, the devices are simply engaged. Profile Rail K-DUCT with Power Rail The profile rail K-DUCT is an aluminum profile rail with Power Rail insert and two integral cable ducts for system and field cables. Due to this assembly no additional cable guides are necessary. Power Rail and Profile Rail must not be fed via the device terminals of the individual devices!
